On June 5th, Yours Humanly will be hosting a Candlelight Vigil in Walnut Creek, CA for the purpose of raising funds for the children who have been orphaned in Nepal, and to get them back into school as soon as possible. A portion of the funds will be used to set up makeshift schools in Nepal so the children can return to attaining a quality education as the nation rebuilds after the crisis.

In attendance to the event will be the Mayor of Walnut Creek, Bob Simmons, who will be lighting the first candle and will also address the audience. In addition, there will be some guest speakers who will address the audience on a variety of topics, including education and the effects of the trauma on children as a result of the tragedy. According to UNICEF, nearly a million children in Nepal will not be able to return to school in the wake of last month’s earthquake unless urgent action is taken. Yours Humanly is making its best efforts to raise funds and to work to set up the makeshift schools which are desperately needed so that the children can continue building for their future.

According to recent data, nine out of ten schools have been destroyed in the worst affected districts, 24,000 classrooms were damaged or destroyed by the disaster, and over 5,000 schools have been flattened.

“With over 5,000 schools destroyed Nepal’s school system is left in shambles. If urgent action is not taken to rebuild the education infrastructure, Nepal could lose an entire generation of children who would not have the chance to go to school and to build essential skills to join the workforce not only in their home country, but in the global economy as well. As humans, we all need to come together to help rebuild the nation,” says Sunny Singh, Executive Director of Yours Humanly.
