Session Description: Modularity reduces software complexity. OSGi is the best model to modularize Java. It works at development as well as runtime and scales from embedded devices to large, distributed clusters. Web applications implementing modularity at runtime provide interesting capabilities to adapt quickly to customer needs and dynamic environments. But there is no out-of-the-box infrastructure. Few containers provide OSGi support, which is not always complete. Very often, developers start with an OSGi framework by themselves and add technology individually, which results into additional maintenance effort going forward. The open source Eclipse Gyrex Project addresses this problem by providing an infrastructure for building OSGi clusters. It combines successful Eclipse RT technologies such as the Equinox OSGi framework, p2 and Jetty with standards such as JAX-RS, dependency injection and websockets allowing seamless and pain-free creation and operation of clustered OSGi applications. In this session we’ll present a technology stack based on Eclipse Gyrex that can be used for building scalable and modular web applications.

Jeff Downs leads a discussion about being agile by keeping the focus on people—rather than processes and tools—through integration. Jeff introduces several tool-agnostic integration patterns, including defect unification, Agile orchestration and supply chain integration, which are critical to any organization trying to succeed with large-scale Agile. During this session, attendees will learn how these integration patterns lead to an integrated Agile tool suite that breaks down the barriers between teams, puts people in a position to continuously collaborate and enables a scaled Agile initiative.

Session Description: OSGi is a model to modularize Java applications at runtime. Unfortunately, not all Java libraries provide the necessary metadata required for OSGi. Thus, if developers want to consume a library, they have to generate the OSGi metadata themselves. This problem is solved by the Eclipse Bundle Recipes project. It provides a library of templates (the “recipes”) and tools that can be used to create OSGi bundles. If you have a library that you'd like to use in your OSGi project, then come to this session by Gunnar Wagenknecht and see if the Eclipse Bundle Recipes (EBR) project already has a recipe for you. During this session, attendees will learn how easy it is to consume libraries from Maven repositories and turn them into OSGi bundles. Gunnar will also demonstrate how the recipes and build system can be deployed in your local environment to create bundles at large scale and consumed in your builds. Last but not least, he will demonstrate how to contribute recipes to the EBR project.
