ATRS Recycles Marathoners Sneakers at Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) June 02, 2015 -- They trained, they prepped, some runners even packed their luggage before competing in the Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & ½. But when American Textile Recycling Service (ATRS) gave marathoners one more way to run clean and run green, they responded.
As victorious athletes crossed the finish line at K Street and 13th Avenue, they were greeted by ATRS green recycling fairies and large rolling carts emblazoned with ROCK RUN RECYCLE HERE banners collecting those stinky, sweaty sneakers for a great cause.
Now in this third year, the ROCK RUN RECYCLE campaign offers marathoners, their friends and family an opportunity to recycling gently worn, out of season, unwanted running gear, sneakers and other apparel throughout the three-day event.
ATRS Recyclers were also on hand at the Health and Fitness Expo and at the Start Lines as runners shed warm-up layers before the race began. Volunteers in bright green tees collected discarded gear along the first five miles of the course. This simple step has a significant impact on diverting textiles from municipal landfill and supporting the City’s goal of zero waste.
Every pound collected over the three-day event supports Giving Children Hope, a local nonprofit facility in Orange County. This partnership is the source of much-needed funding for “We’ve Got Your Back,” a school nutrition program that feeds hungry students and international disaster relief in affected areas like Nepal.
Thanks to support from marathoners and attendees, the donations from race day, the Health & Fitness Expo and the Finish Line totaled approximately 8,000 lbs. of warm up gear, clothing, shoes and unclaimed finisher medals, tees and other race day swag. An additional 17,000 lbs. of perishable foods including water, cranberries and bananas were collected from the finish line to support the Giving Children Hope nutrition program.
