As a parent of young children, I value educational resources that can help my children learn basic skills. I’m pleased that Evan-Moor is providing this free resource to help children learn the alphabet and get ready for kindergarten.

A student’s academic success may very well begin with learning the ABCs. As years of studies have concluded, “The cognitive skills children demonstrate at kindergarten entry can potentially shape their early school experience.” (Sameroff and Haith, 1996)
How many kindergarteners know their letters when they enter kindergarten? A comprehensive study of America’s kindergarteners showed that 66% passed reading proficiency level one (recognizing their letters) as they entered kindergarten for the first time in 2000. (National Center for Education Statistics, America’s Kindergartners, 2000)
Common Core Reading Standards stipulate that kindergartners are expected to “recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.” (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.1.d) Becoming familiar with the alphabet helps to give children a strong start in kindergarten.
To this end, Evan-Moor Educational Publishers is offering parents free interactive activities as one way to help children practice and learn their letters to prepare for kindergarten.

These online flashcards include real-life photography to help children connect images with upper- and lowercase letters, as well as a timer that can be pre-set or hidden from view to create a fun “beat the clock” learning experience.
