California Dental Group Recognizes Men’s Health Month with No-cost Oral Cancer Screenings at 6 of their offices in Southern California
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 09, 2015 -- In recognition of the fact that oral cancer poses a significant risk to men’s health, especially as men age, this year California Dental Group is celebrating Men’s Health Month with free oral cancer screenings. The screenings are open to all adults and will be available by appointment on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at their Los Angeles, Glendale, North Hollywood, Tustin, Upland, and Port Hueneme offices.
Men over the age of 45, along with elderly patients, have the highest risk of developing oral cancer. In fact, 90 percent of oral cancer occurs in patients over 45. Men of African ancestry need to be particularly vigilant in getting routine oral cancer screenings as their risk is especially high in every age group.
Oral cancer has the potential to be deadly. Left undiagnosed, it tends to spread rapidly to surrounding tissues and organs, resulting in a death rate higher than that of many other cancers such as cervical cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, cancer of the testes, and endocrine system cancers. This year alone, over 8,650 people will lose their lives due to oral cancer.
The good news is that oral cancer is highly curable in its early stages. In fact, early detection provides patients with an 80 to 90 percent survival rate.
Dentists are often the first line of defense against oral cancer, a fact which California Dental Group hopes to publicize with this year’s free oral cancer screening event.
Many of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer, such as unusual oral pain, bleeding, or numbness, mimic other dental problems and naturally lead patients to visit the dentist for help. Other symptoms, such as sores or lumps in the mouth, white or red patches on the gums or tongue, or persistent sore throats, are less obvious. By getting an oral cancer screening, patients can ensure that their dentist will have the opportunity to check for all possible signs and symptoms of oral cancer, even those that the patients themselves may have missed.
In addition to age, other risk factors for oral cancer include use of tobacco (including smokeless products), use of alcohol, and exposure to sexually transmitted HPV (16 and 180). Patients of all ages are therefore encouraged to contact California Dental Group’s following locations to request their no-cost oral cancer screening on June 12, 2015 or to schedule a complete dental exam including oral cancer screening:
