The Year of the HIPAA Data Breach. Base2 Solutions Announces that 87% of Americans Are Estimated to Have their Health Records Breached in 2015.
Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) June 10, 2015 -- -INFOGRAPH-
Patients impacted, number of cyber incidents, and costs to organizations aren’t just on the rise, they are skyrocketing. Over 93 million individuals have had their health data breached this year alone, as reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In the first half of 2015, twelve times more individuals have been impacted by data breaches than in the last five years combined.
Beginning in February with the announcement of the Anthem and Premera breaches to last week’s announcement of the Federal Government data breach, the largest cyberattack in our nation’s history, the year 2015 promises to rake in unimaginable numbers across all industries.
If the rate of HIPAA violations continues, 279 million Americans will have their health information breached in the year 2015. The HHS office publicly reports only HIPAA violations where more than 500 records were breached. The actual numbers of individuals affected are even higher.
“It is not just about losing paperwork or having a laptop stolen anymore,” says Andrew Hosch, Vice President of Software Engineering at Base2 Solutions, “Organizations are increasingly the target of systematic cyberattacks. As the street value of health records continues to climb, so does the cost to protect and clean up after an attack.”
Lost, stolen, or improperly disposed of devices and physical documents used to be the most common method of intrusion. This year, cyberattacks, hacking, and unauthorized virtual intrusions accounts for over 90% of HIPAA breaches.
Many of these breaches, officials say, can be avoided through regular risk analysis and updating company policies. "Technical assessments have to be combined with an understanding of workflow, policies, and procedures to be effective,” says Hosch, “A network scan, for example, can tell you a server is at risk, but it can’t tell you what needs to be done and in what priority.”
The new trend is cyberattack, and these breaches are more aggressive, affect more patients, and cost more money than ever before. Base2 Solutions, a technology services company specializing in information security in highly regulated industries, has created an infograph to display the statistics, costs, and trends of electronic HIPAA breaches.
