The Coop Passabene mobile app leverages Scandit to offer customers an expedited self-checkout while shopping in-store.
With its Passabene mobile app, Coop sought to expand its successful Passabene self-checkout solution to customers’ mobile devices. The app enables Coop customers to use their personal smartphones to scan items and add them directly to their own shopping bags as they move through the store, allowing them to save time by bypassing the traditional checkout experience.
In order to ensure customers could successfully use the Passabene app in the store environment, Coop needed to implement a fast, flexible and easy-to-use self-scanning technology that performed with the speed and accuracy of a traditional handheld scanner. Scandit’s Barcode Scanner SDK stood out as the fastest and most reliable solution available, offering barcode scanning from any angle, on any surface and on the largest number of consumer mobile devices.
Since its launch, the Passabene self-scanning mobile app has been overwhelmingly successful and is now available in more than 100 stores across Switzerland, with more than 280,000 customers having registered for the Passabene system. The Passabene system is responsible for up to 25% of revenue at each Passabene-enabled store, and that number continues to grow as more customers enroll. Coop also reports that customer satisfaction has increased due to a more personalized shopping experience and shortened wait times at checkout.

Coop@home reinvents the mobile shopping experience with an easy-to-use mobile shopping app that features Scandit’s high performance barcode scanning technology.
In 2009 coop@home developed a mobile shopping app that aimed to empower customers to shop from anywhere with their mobile devices. Today thousands of coop@home customers place online and mobile orders from the 13,000 products available and choose to have their purchases delivered to their homes the same day or to pick them up at drive-through stations. Coop@home creates a revolutionary mobile retail experience that allows customers to purchase goods from their smartphones in a variety of innovative ways—including the use of virtual shopping walls placed in locations such as train stations in Switzerland where commuters can simply scan a product and complete a purchase on the fly.
When developing the mobile shopping app, coop@home realized they would need advanced barcode scanning technology to complete the seamless point and purchase transaction they envisioned. The application had to be easy for shoppers to use and capable of scanning items in challenging environments and lighting scenarios with speed and accuracy. If the app was to be successful then it must be able to scan barcodes on any package, across multiple surfaces and all the while compensate for new users seeking a seamless shopping experience free of difficulty. Coop@home decided to integrate Scandit’s Barcode Scanner SDK into the coop@home mobile shopping app because it provided the simplicity, speed and performance necessary to make their app easy to use for all users.
Today, more than 25% of coop@home customers place shopping orders using mobile devices and are successfully able to scan barcodes, retrieve product data, and purchase products delivered to their door without ever stepping foot into a store. The Scandit-powered coop@home mobile shopping app for iOS and Android has gone from generating less than 5% of coop home’s annual revenue in 2011 to more than 20% in 2014.
