Vionic Group Celebrates National Flip Flop Day June 19th
San Rafael, CA (PRWEB) June 16, 2015 -- Specializing in orthopedic and sports physical therapy, Brian Hoke has a particular interest in the biomechanical factors influencing lower limb rehabilitation. He is co-owner and director of Atlantic Physical Therapy, a private practice in Virginia Beach, VA. Brian is a board certified Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy, a distinction achieved by fewer than 600 physical therapists in the U.S. He works with athletes of all levels—from recreational runners to elite professional and Olympic athletes. He is a member of the Vionic Innovation Lab.
Year in and year out, flip flops remain an irreplaceable summer staple. “With the rising temperatures, clothing selections trend towards lighter colors, materials and fabrics. When it comes to footwear, this translates to leaving the closed-toe shoes in the closet and putting on a pair of flip flops,” says Brian Hoke, DPT and Sports Physical Therapist. “Unfortunately, this choice often means abandoning the foot support that a shoe can provide, particularly when that shoe is combined with an orthotic footbed.”
Hoke places much of the blame for foot pain on “the surfaces people walk on,” asserting that when walking barefoot at the beach, for example, “the soft sand cushions one’s impact and then molds to the many contours of the foot, reducing the pressure.” However, most of the time, people walk and stand on hard, unnatural surfaces. “When walking on the sidewalk or street, the hard, man-made surface (made for the wheel, not the foot) causes the arches of the foot to flatten,” he says. And traditional flip flops do little to help that problem. “The classic flip flop is also flat, allowing the arch to continue to collapse, and doing nothing to add support.”
Fortunately, it’s possible to enjoy the carefree ease of wearing a flip flop without the detriments to one’s foot health. “Flip flops specifically formulated for support, like Vionics, have all of the appearances of the classic silhouette. But the foot beds of these models mimic our footprints in the sand, gently cradling the heel and supporting the arch area to prevent collapse,” says Hoke.
Supportive flip flops are a key to feeling good after hours of summer activity, so make a conscientious choice while enjoying Flip Flop Day in style and comfort.
