Global courier warns ex-pats that Father’s Day may not be when they think.

Father's Day is not next Sunday in every country, make sure you are in time says Fastlane International

‘It may be Father’s Day in nearly 80 countries; but for many more it happens on a different day.’

The third Sunday in June (June 21) is the day many people will be treating their dads; and global courier Fastlane International says there is still time for ex-pats in the US to send a gift to parents in countries such as Britain, France, India, the Czech Republic and Canada.

However Fastlane spokesman David Jinks warns that it’s not Father’s Day in every country, and that for some nations ex-pat kids may be too late. He says: ‘It may be Father’s Day in nearly 80 countries; but for many more it happens on a different day.’

Explains David ‘Many countries use the same date, including Ireland, France, Cyprus, South Africa, Netherlands, Greece, Japan, Czech Republic, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Pakistan, India and Saudi Arabia. However, it was earlier this month for places such as Switzerland, Austria and Belgium; and sadly back in March for Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Croatia. You might need to send a nice gift by way of apology!’

‘The good news,’ continues David, ‘is that there’s plenty of time for Australian and New Zealand ex-pats, Father’s Day is not till September there, and many Scandinavian countries don’t celebrate it until November.’

David observes Germany’s Father’s Day sounds most ‘Dad-ish’: ‘It’s held on Ascension Day and fathers march round town pulling little carts loaded with beer.’

Why the different dates? Explains David: ‘The US started celebrating Father’s Day in 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon about Mother’s Day and decided her dad, a Civil War veteran and single parent, should be equally honoured. The third Sunday of June was chosen for the simple reason it was the first Sunday near her dad’s birthday her Minister could organize! Other countries quickly adopted the new tradition; but unfortunately for us forgetful offspring, many chose different dates to tie in with their Founder’s day or religious celebrations.’

Concludes David: ‘As a Dad myself I’m glad Sonora had the idea. I now have quite a stock of key rings and boxer shorts with 'World’s Best Dad’ on. Don’t forget to mail your inspired gifts in good time. Couriers such as Fastlane International can ship parcels to and from the US and Europe in just one to two days, so there’s no excuse for not sending your father a present and card!’
