(New Book) Author’s Family of Characters Bring Another of Nicholaas’ Adventures to Life
McHenry, IL (PRWEB) June 14, 2015 -- When Betty Davis, a McHenry, IL, phonics tutor and author of adventure books for teens, talks about the characters in her most recent book – “The Worldly Adventures of Nicholaas In England: Yesterday's Heroes (Volume 3)” – it’s as though she’s talking about members of her own family.
As was the case in her first two novels, Nicholaas, the protagonist embarks on adventure, this time to London, to watch his beloved Minnesota Vikings battle the St. Louis Rams. A chance meeting with a disabled boy at the stadium leads to an invitation to an equestrian-therapy stable. Here, the story takes a magical twist as Nicholaas is suddenly confronting a burning barn at the home of the president – Abraham Lincoln, that is.
Davis weaves a tale of inquisitive teenagers who have somehow escaped the lotus-eaters’ appeal of electronic gaming and gadgetry that has so many other teenagers trapped in its grasp. Her characters are free to explore the world. Of course, that poses one of the major questions about Nicholaas – are his vignettes of his imagination or are they real? Ultimately, that’s for the reader to decide.
Extensive research, and a good friend living in Amsterdam, helps Davis bring the places Nicholaas visits to life.
“A friend in Amsterdam helps with my research by describing some of the places Nicholaas visits,” Davis said. “Through my friend, I can describe an experience so readers feel as though they’re there.”
Her goal is also to help broaden the understanding young readers have of the world.
“The more knowledge you have, the more confident you feel about yourself and the more secure you feel about the world,” Davis said.
While her books help to enlighten young readers, they never lose sight of that other key ingredient – to entertain. She’s already started on another edition where she’ll entertain and inform her readers as Nicholaas embarks on a new adventure. A release date is pending.
