Dunn&Co. Wins Prestigious International CLIO Award for Tampa Bay Lightning Creative Advertising

Award represents first CLIO for a Tampa agency in 17 years.

As the Tampa Bay Lightning makes headlines in the Stanley Cup Finals, its advertising agency has garnered international recognition for making literal headlines for the team. For the first time in 17 years, a Tampa-based agency -- Dunn&Co. -- has been recognized by the CLIOs, the esteemed international competition honoring creative excellence, with an award in the sports category for its outdoor creative, “Highway Slapshot.”

The CLIO was awarded to Dunn&Co. for producing billboards that ran parallel to one another on northbound Interstate 275, just north of the I-4 junction. The left side billboard depicted Lightning player Valtteri Filppula shooting a slapshot, with the simple tagline, “Be the thunder.” On the right side of the interstate was an advertisement for a fictitious company, Flex Fitness, with the billboard being destroyed by a Lightning-branded hockey puck, presumably from Filppula’s slapshot. The portion of the billboard remaining revealed the company’s website, FlexFitness20.com, which actually redirected visitors to a website to order Tampa Bay Lightning season tickets.

“The goal was to build awareness and drive ticket sales for the Lightning, so we wanted to produce something that was both unexpected and memorable,” said Dunn&Co. president, Troy Dunn. “With support from both the Lightning and Outfront Media, we were able to produce work that attracted immense attention nationwide from hockey fans and hockey publications alike; and now getting the nod from CLIO, whom we have enormous respect for as one of the world’s leading reviewers of creative thinking, is a boon for Dunn&Co., the Lightning organization, and for the Tampa Bay sports and advertising communities.”
