Matthew J. Cannon will participate on the following two panels:

  • Responding to the Headlines: Proactive Strategies When Your Client, Industry or Business Partner is Under Investigation.Topics will include:

o    How to gather the information you need to understand your involvement
o    Establishing and keeping privilege protection
o    Determining whether to contact the enforcement agencies

  •     Third Party Due Diligence Best Practices in High Risk Countries. Topics to be discussed include:

o    How to identify risky third party transactions
o    How frequently should you review existing third parties
o    How much can you rely on third party monitoring services

Event materials note: FCPA enforcement continues in 2015 and the scope has expanded to include non-US companies and corporate executives. The SEC has recently announced plans to focus not only on multi-nationals but also on small and medium companies who are expanding internationally for the first time. Recent headlines also indicate that no industry is immune from FCPA investigations.

Cannon, resident in the firm’s Chicago office, has almost two decades of criminal and civil litigation experience. He has served as the First Chair in numerous federal jury trials and has combined his courtroom skills, his experience as a federal prosecutor with the Department of Justice (DOJ), and his wide-ranging civil litigation skills into a practice that combines anti-corruption compliance work and litigation. Cannon’s practice includes implementing and assessing anti-corruption compliance programs throughout the world, including programs focused on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the U.K. Bribery Act. His practice also includes handling DOJ and SEC FCPA investigations, False Claims Act investigations, and litigation for defense contractors and health care providers. Cannon also handles antitrust matters, class action securities fraud litigation, and derivative and corporate governance breach of fiduciary duty matters. Cannon conducts internal investigations for companies and defends companies against DOJ, Antitrust Division, SEC, and state attorney general investigations in relation to white-collar matters, including matters that involve the FCPA, the False Claims Act, ITAR, securities fraud, antitrust, and cybersecurity breaches. Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig, Cannon served as a federal prosecutor for more than seven years.
