Melanoma Risk Outweighs Sunbathing Benefit Reports Fresh Water Advocate Sharon Kleyne
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) June 17, 2015 -- With hot, sunny, summer weather arriving early this year, fresh water advocate and radio host Sharon Kleyne warns sunbathers that the risks associated with sunbathing far outweigh the benefits. The “worst case” danger of sunbathing is an increased skin cancer risk, particularly melanoma, which can incubate for decades with no visible symptoms, and is often fatal. There are also other dangers to sunbathing. The most significant benefit is increased Vitamin D, whose manufacture in the skin is stimulated by direct sunlight.
Kleyne will talk about sunbathing, skin care and melanoma on her June 22, 2015 Sharon Kleyne Hour™ Power of Water® broadcast. For the live show or a podcast, go to http://www.SharonKleyneHour.com.
The syndicated radio show, hosted by Kleyne, is heard weekly on VoiceAmerica and Apple iTunes. The education oriented show is sponsored by Bio-Logic Aqua® Research, founded by Kleyne and specializing in fresh water, the atmosphere, accelerated moisture evaporation and dehydration. Nature’s Mist® Face of the Water® is the Research Center’s all-natural skin humidifying product.
Prior to the mid-1800’s, Kleyne explains, tanned skin was largely associated with laborers and peasants and was therefore undesirable. With the industrial revolution, tanned skin and sunbathing began taking on different connotations. Most laborers at that time performed indoor work, while outdoor workers usually had the good sense to cover themselves. Only the wealthy had sufficient spare time to deliberately sit in the sun. As a result, a good, all-over tan came to be considered attractive.
Because of health concerns, Kleyne adds, beginning in the 1970’s, sunbathing popularity has diminished. Rather than sit in the sun, many people prefer chemical tans or tanning beds.
The most serious danger of sunbathing, according to Kleyne, is a greatly increased risk of skin cancer, especially melanoma. Melanoma can begin with severe sunburn in childhood and incubate for decades before a visible tumor develops. Melanoma is easily cured if caught early but can be deadly if it isn’t. Melanoma tumors in general (but not always) are larger than a pencil eraser, rapidly growing, and have an irregular edge, a very dark color and a red base.
Skin cancer is caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, Kleyne explains. UVA is most common and most dangerous while UVB is less dangerous. Sunscreens work by blocking UVA and UVB radiation. The higher the SPF factor, the more they block. Tanning beds also emit UVA radiation and Kleyne does not consider them safe.
Other skin cancers such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, Kleyne explains, are far less likely to spread and become fatal (although this can happen). They do, however, eat away flesh and should be removed as soon as discovered. As with melanoma, carcinoma lesions are most likely to occur on sun exposed areas – but not always.
Other sunbathing dangers include sunburn, accelerated evaporation of skin water, skin and body dehydration, tanning addiction and premature skin aging.
The main benefit of sunbathing, according to Kleyne, is increased vitamin D production in the skin. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular disease, seasonal affective disorder, multiple sclerosis, cancer, rickets and osteoporosis. The application of sunscreen with an SPF protection factor of 8, says Kleyne, reduces vitamin D production in the skin by 95%. Vitamin D can also be obtained from certain foods, artificial light and nutrition supplements.
Kleyne recommends applying sunscreen whenever one goes outside in daytime – summer or winter and good weather or bad. She also recommends avoiding direct sun exposure, noting that it requires only about 10 minutes in the sun to meet the body’s daily vitamin D requirement.
To maintain optimum skin health and UV resistance, Kleyne also recommends drinking at least eight glasses of water a day and frequent application of the skin humidifying product Nature’s Mist®, from Kleyne’s Bio-Logic Aqua® Research.
