When water removal isn’t enough, as it often isn’t, it may be time to look into mosquito control services.

American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) has designated June 21 to June 27, 2015 as National Mosquito Control Awareness Week. AMCA is an international organization of nearly 2,000 public health professionals who are dedicated to protecting the public’s health and well-being through safe, environmentally sound mosquito control programs since 1935.

There are over 3,000 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world and 176 recognized in the United States. Mosquitoes can be a serious problem during the warmer months, as some are capable of transmitting diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filariasis, and West Nile virus to humans and animals. One way to combat the spread of disease is with mosquito control.

One of Spring-Green’s summertime services is mosquito control, where customers’ lawns and landscapes are sprayed to repel and prevent any mosquitoes during the warmer months. They recommend multiple applications in order to achieve the best results, as mosquitoes multiply quickly and frequently. Mosquito control is especially recommended around holidays like July 4th and Labor Day due to an increase in outdoor festivities.

Jason Vahle, Spring-Green owner in the St. Charles, Chesterfield, and O’Fallon, MO area, is selling mosquito control applications for the first time this year, though he has extensive lawn care experience that has brought with him. Years before partnering with Spring-Green in late 2014, Vahle started his very own lawn care business called Green Thumb Lawn & Landscape that he still owns and operates today. Vahle purchased his Spring-Green franchise to diversify his current service offerings at Green Thumb, which already generates almost $1 million in revenue each year. Although Vahle has worked in the green industry for most of his life, he values the marketing and specialty support that Spring-Green provides their franchise owners, especially for a newer service like mosquito control.

Mosquitoes often hide in grass, shrubs, and trees during the day, so spraying these areas with a control product will not only treat the current mosquitoes, but will repel new mosquitoes that enter a customer’s yard.

Harold Enger, Director of Education for Spring-Green Lawn Care says “One of the best ways to reduce mosquito populations around your home is to reduce the amount of standing water due to that being the source of new populations. When this isn’t enough, as it often isn’t, it may be time to look into mosquito control services,” says Enger. He also recommends that customers perform the following:

  • Empty bird baths, fountains, plant pot dishes, pet water dishes, buckets, toys, or any other location where water may accumulate.
  • Check gutters a day or so after it rains.
  • Keep swimming pools and ornamental ponds clean and properly filtered. Empty kiddie pools on a regular basis.
  • Wheel barrows and garden carts can easily collect water. Make sure these are left inside a shed or garage or prop them upright to allow water to drain out.
  • Mow your lawn on a regular basis. Mosquitoes will seek out cool places during the day. Overly long grass makes a great hiding place.

Similarly, AMCA uses the “Three Ds of Mosquito Prevention – Drain, Dress, and Defend.” This rule covers draining any containers that hold water, wear long-sleeved, light colored clothing, and use mosquito repelling products that contain DEET or a similar product.
