So, while kids are out of school and families head to pools and beaches, it is important for small business owners and entrepreneurs to remain productive during the summer months. While we all should be celebrating the Fourth of July and Labor Day, it would be wise for small business owners to observe World Productivity Day on Saturday, June 20th, and kick start a summer of productivity.

1.    Find a balance. The only thing worse than being unproductive is being overworked. Owning and running a small business can be a stressful, thankless endeavor, which leads most to believe there is no time for a break. There is and when you find it, take advantage of a day or two to unwind, relax with family and friends, and unplug from the daily grind. You will return to work refreshed and ready to take on your next challenge.

2.    Slow work should not equal no work. Many small businesses see workloads shrink during the summer months, but that doesn’t mean it’s a time to slack off. If work is slow, use the time to get a head start on upcoming projects, learn or improve a skill that will make you even more valuable to your clients, or reassess the identity and functionality of your operation.

3.    Check in with your customers. Throughout the year, vendors reach out to their customers for many things but mostly it’s when they need something. The summer is a great time to call your customers to check in and see how things are going and let them know how much you appreciate their business. Come up with a short survey to send to your customers and ask them to grade your business on its performance over the last year. This will keep you informed and let your customers know that you value their opinions.

4.    Volunteer. Time and expertise are essentials for running a successful small business, but they are also invaluable for non-profit organizations and charities. Find a local organization that would benefit from you and your employees’ skills and volunteer. Not only will you be supporting a good cause, but it’s also a great opportunity to strengthen your team’s morale.

It’s a common misconception that the summer months are a wasteland for productivity. Small businesses and entrepreneurs should not fall prey to such notions, but capitalize on the opportunity to improve their business and reinvigorate their outlook for the rest of the year. Use World Productivity Day as a starting point to prepare for your most productive summer yet.
