Silverado Formalizes Research and Training Partnership with University of California, San Diego School of Medicine
SAN DIEGO, CA (PRWEB) June 24, 2015 -- Silverado and the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) School of Medicine this week formalized an affiliation to train future geriatrics leaders. Beginning July 1, Silverado will become a training site for three Geriatric Fellows who will care for residents at Silverado Encinitas Memory Care Community under the guidance of Program Director Victor Legner, MD, MS, a dementia expert who also serves as the community’s Medical Director.
Each year, the University of California, San Diego Geriatrics Fellowship Program trains three fellows who develop the skills needed to become board-certified geriatricians. Building on an existing 18-year relationship between UC San Diego and Silverado, the project aims to improve quality of life for people with dementia by bringing together Alzheimer’s research and education within Silverado’s unique memory care-only environment.
“Over the past 18 years, we’ve been energized by our relationship with UC San Diego and the strides they’ve made toward helping the world better understand Alzheimer’s disease,” said Silverado President, Chairman and CEO Loren Shook. “This expanded partnership blends UC San Diego’s cutting-edge research with Silverado’s commitment to provide quality of life to people with various dementias through world-class memory care.”
UC San Diego School of Medicine is known globally for research efforts on Alzheimer’s disease — particularly for its discovery of the Beta Amyloid Plaque Hypothesis, thought by many as the cause of Alzheimer’s. Silverado is often recognized nationally and internationally for its efforts to change the way care is provided to those with memory-impairing diseases. This yearlong fellowship program meets requirements set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), a private, nonprofit responsible for reviewing graduate medical education programs.
This partnership is funded in part by a $10,000 grant from Health Care REIT. The donation was made on behalf of Shook to honor him for the Alzheimer’s expertise he brings to The Aspen Institute's Spotlight Health event this week, which is being sponsored by the REIT.
