Tampa, Florida (PRWEB) June 29, 2015
Benzer Pharmacy announced today that it will work towards a zero environmental footprint by conserving, restoring, and replacing the natural resources used in its operations.
Benzer Pharmacy, a chain of independent retail pharmacies specializing in compound and specialty medications is now going green by offering its customers a free convenient solution for customers to safely dispose their unwanted drugs that may be dangerous to others and the environment.
In response to news about the presence of pharmaceuticals contaminating the water supply and teenage abuse of prescription drugs, patients of any pharmacy are invited to safely dispose of unused or expired medications that are in the original container at Benzer Pharmacy, located at 2812 W. MLK Jr. Blvd, Tampa, FL, 33607. Benzer is offering this service free of charge. The pharmacy will work to dispose of the drugs using the Sharps TakeAway™ Environmental Return System, a safe, easy method to dispose unused patient medications in an environmentally friendly way.
“As a local independent pharmacy, Benzer understands that it is important to give back to the community that supports our business. In this regard, the pharmacy is committed to safe environmental practices as well as helping customers prevent misuse of their unused medications by offering “Dispose My Meds”. Dispose My Meds is a prescription drug take-back program, in partnership with the National Community Pharmacists Association,” says Emah Madegwa, Media and PR Manager.
As a member of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), Benzer Pharmacy is initiating this medication disposal program to properly dispose pharmaceuticals.
“Our aim is to showcase our leadership in protecting the environment and preventing medication misuse by ensuring the safe and proper handling of medications, from dispensing to disposal,” adds Emah. “Benzer Pharmacy further welcomes everyone in the community to come and talk to our pharmacists about their prescriptions and how to store, use and dispose them of properly,” advises Emah.
Unused or expired medications pose risks to our families, communities, and the environment. The Office of National Drug Control has found that prescription drugs are the drug of choice among 12- and 13-year olds, while a third of all new abusers of prescription drugs were between the ages of 12 and 17. Though it may be argued that the presence of drugs in drinking water is negligible, more and more consumers are disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the drain, adding pharmaceutical pollution to our waters. In addition, medicines thrown in the trash can end up in landfills if not first picked up by children, pets, sanitation employees, or anyone who rummages through trash.
The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA®) represents America’s community pharmacists, including the owners of more than 23,000 community pharmacies, pharmacy franchises, and chains. Together they represent an $84 billion health-care marketplace, employ over 300,000 full-time employees, and dispense nearly half of the nation's retail prescription medicines.
Benzer Pharmacy is in the process of getting more disposal containers for all of its locations nationwide. “This is just the beginning of Benzer Pharmacy’s commitment to working towards a zero environmental foot print as the pharmacy is in the pipeline to explore more comprehensive approaches to reduce our environmental impact and to create meaningful and sustained change,” Emah concludes.
