Dr. Ken Cirka joins with MGE Management, Nationwide Groups and Dental Practices to Support The Boys and Girls Club in Fight Against Illiteracy
Philadelphia. PA. (PRWEB) July 02, 2015 -- Dr. Ken Cirka of Philadelphia Dentistry in Philadelphia has returned from a major event in Florida attended by national experts and VIPs to benefit the Boys and Girls clubs and other groups in the fight against illiteracy. The annual event is sponsored by MGE Management Experts at their corporate headquarters near Tampa. This year, hundreds of thousands of new books and audio books will be provided to underserved school children nationwide.
The keynote speaker of the event, Dr. Lisa Nagy, is a national expert on environmental illness recently appointed to a human-health working group by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Dr. Nagy spoke on chemical-related health issues that can impact youth and their performance.
Dr. Cirka participated with over 250 other dental practitioners from around the country and their management teams, as well as regional media owners, businessmen, clergy and concerned citizens for the 2015 Annual MGE Owners’ Conference and Benefit Dinner. Dr. Cirka, along with his office manager, Sandy Samarco, were the guest speakers for this year’s Owners’ Conference. The event raises funds for the Improving Youth Literacy Campaign, which supports Boys and Girls Clubs and youth programs across the country. In addition to financial support, thousands of audio and paper books were provided to underserved schoolchildren nationwide.
Other notables participating in the Benefit included international diplomat Joseph Grieboski of Washington DC, who has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize; founders, publishers and editors of Tampa Bay Magazine, Mr. Aaron Fodiman and Ms. Margaret Wood Burnside; Mr. John Spagnola, president and CEO of DC Strategic Solutions; and the Rev. Alfreddie Johnson, founder of the World Literacy Crusade International.
A central concern of those attending is that poverty and illiteracy are so closely linked, leading to a vicious cycle in which the poor remain so through the generations. Dr. Cirka from Philadelphia Dentistry and his team decided to take a stand to help break this cycle by joining forces with MGE Management Experts at the company’s Annual Benefit Dinner to raise funds for the Improving Youth Literacy Campaign.
According to the National Center for Education, approximately 10.9 million U.S. school-age children 5 to 17 years old are from families living in poverty. Research shows that living in poverty during early childhood is associated with lower than average academic performance that begins in kindergarten and extends through elementary and high school.
Through the gift of one book, one child can be provided with a tool they need to help give them a chance to help break the cycle of poverty. This fundraiser places hundreds of thousands of books in the hands of children at risk, one blow in the battle against illiteracy.
In the words of Dr. Cirka,
“Our practice is committed to giving back to our community. Participation with the Improving Youth Literacy Campaign to help youth groups like the Boys and Girls Clubs of America promotes literacy to underprivileged children. I spent years ago while at Grove City College working with homeless youth in New York City at the Covenant House and I think this is a great continuation of effort I started 25 years ago. The gift of reading will help young people break the cycle of poverty by gaining more ability to learn so they can get a better education, better jobs and success. I was honored to be a part of this event."
The event was hosted at MGE’s headquarters, which was transformed into a Vegas-style casino for charity. All proceeds were given to the Improving Youth Literacy Campaign supporting Boys and Girls clubs and Youth programs across America. Dentists from across the country as well as prominent figures from the local community attended the event. Highlights from the night included gaming tables for entertainment purposes only, celebrity impersonators (such as Marilyn Monroe, James Bond, Austin Powers and a live performance “Lady Gaga”), a four-star dinner by Café Ponte, a raffle and live auction. MGE dental clients and concerned members of the community donated items for a lively auction, and all funds raised went to benefit Boys and Girls Club of America and other youth programs.
Top auction items included: Rebecca Minkoff luxury bags; Clearwater Beach vacation package; social media package from Batya Maman-Sabag of Social Connect; fashion items from New York designer Craig Taylor; meals from Café Ponte; two carat diamond tennis bracelet, signed Lady Gaga poster, and much more. All funds raised went to the Improving Youth Literacy Campaign.
