New research focused on world population access to internet conducted by Invesp reveals that 42% of the world population has penetrated the internet; however, with mobile device spread and accessibility, half of the world’s population will be accessing the internet through mobile devices alone by the year 2020. Data reveals that the US continues to top the lists having more than 84% of its population online.
Ayat Shukairy, Invesp co-founder, said, “ with world population day in a few days, the Invesp team wanted to better understand global access to the internet, social media access, and e-commerce penetration in different countries.” Different aspects of the research data are available to the public in an easy to understand infographic.
“Irrespective of the spread of war, poverty, limited electricity or censorship, internet and social media usage is growing. Global connectivity is increasing, which means increased awareness.” The world is beginning to read and see more of what is happening as social media usage skyrockets to 30% of the world’s population. Shukairy added, “the average internet user spends over 4 hours and a half of their time on the internet. Social media users average to about 2 hours and a half.”
Another interesting finding is that the worlds’ internet users are also more inclined to purchase online. 45% of the world’s internet users are making purchases online. Concerns that used to stop internet users from sharing information and making transactions online have become a worry in the past. These numbers will continue to grow and increase in the coming years making our world more digital, but smaller and more connected. Increased internet usage has improved global connectivity, grown the online shopping industry, and has made social media more accessible.
