Addictions initiating from unsecured prescription drugs held in medicine cabinets are fueling an opioid epidemic throughout our country. 52 million people in the US over the age of 12 have used prescription drugs non-medically in their lifetime (1). Drug prevention coalitions and health departments nationwide have been encouraging people to dispose of unused medications as well as responsibly secure those actively being taken by prescribed patients. At present, only a small percentage of households are taking the simple step of locking away medications.
4Thought Products LLC has entered Pill Pod™ medication lock box in Intuit’s Big Game advertising contest where one lucky small business will receive a free thirty second ad during the Super Bowl. “Aside from getting visibility for our medication safety product line, we hope to deliver a public health service message to a large number viewers. I hope that Pill Pod can make a positive impact and be part of a comprehensive solution in the same way child-proof safety caps contributed to poison prevention when introduced. Part of the contest is based on voting from Intuit’s website and we hope to get the support of people to vote for us,” states developer and company founder Steve Small.
In 2014, Pill Pod™ product line was launched as an affordable and simple solution to encourage responsible storage of Rx drugs at home. It is currently being distributed into US communities by drug prevention coalitions and health departments. The products have recently received two US utility patents.
Pill Pod has been engineered from a “clean sheet of paper” and uses a unique hinge-less removable combination locking cover. It is designed to be both light weight and strong with “pick-resistant” features that provide added security. It is simple to use and comes with a pre-assigned four digit code requiring no set up. The compact size allows it to fit into standard depth medicine cabinets and it is convenient for travel use providing privacy. The container can store up to eight pill bottles and accept taller liquid bottles. Pill Pod is available for purchase on the company’s website http://www.pill-pod.com as well as on Amazon. Other products with different capacities will be released in the future.
