In the rapidly evolving medical industry, the practice of aesthetics was once the province of medical doctors. In the past decade it has gradually been overtaken by profit-seeking businesses employing people without a medical background or proper training. Unfortunately, this encroachment is often done with the assistance of physicians who permit non-medical personnel to work under their licenses without training or oversight. As known by most medical doctors in dermatology, plastic surgery, ENT and ophthalmology/occulo-plastics, this has led to a reduction in the quality of care, a diminished reputation for everyone performing aesthetic medicine, and unnecessary injury to patients.

The biggest problem in this reduction of care is that the public is unaware. Very few states have a requirement to inform a prospective patient of the credentials of the person performing a procedure, even when the procedure is defined as “medical.” People seeking to improve their health and appearance through aesthetics do not realize that “cut rate” is almost universally synonymous with “reduced quality, training and safety.”

In 2013, a group of the best medical doctors who perform aesthetic medicine began analyzing the problem and considered ways to address the information shortage faced by consumers. Two years later the result is the first organization dedicated to identifying and supporting physician-led aesthetic medical practices that adhere to the highest standards of training and oversight: Doctors for the Practice of Safe and Ethical Aesthetic Medicine (“DPSEAM”).

DPSEAM is dedicated to informing the general public that DPSEAM-certified clinics practice aesthetic medicine in the safest, most ethical fashion under the direct guidance of a Medical Doctor who is board-certified. The result is that aesthetic patients can now make an informed choice between the minor cost saving of the “strip mall spa” versus the quality and safety of aesthetics performed by the best physicians in their field. “We are giving patients the tools and knowledge to make the best decisions concerning aesthetic medicine and their health.” said Charles E. Crutchfield III M.D. of Eagan, Minnesota’s Crutchfield Dermatology. The founders of DPSEAM have a combined 200 years operating the most successful aesthetic medical practices in their markets.
