Global Ophthalmic Industry Leader AMO Selects Jeffrey Martin, MD To Lecture Colleagues On Latest Breakthroughs In Cataract Care
Smithtown, New York (PRWEB) July 14, 2015 -- In an effort to help surgeons across the northeast enhance their cataract surgical skills and become familiar with the most recent advancements in cataract care, Abbott Medical Optics Inc. (AMO) has selected Long Island eye surgeon Jeffrey L. Martin, MD to lecture at several physician events this summer in New Jersey. Dr. Martin is the Managing Partner of North Shore Eye Care.
Dr. Martin was selected by AMO to lecture on Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery and premium lens implant technology because of his vast experience in the field of cataract removal and lens implantation. His two most recent AMO lectures were held at Ridgewood, NJ and Rumson, NJ, where key cataract surgeons from across the region were in attendance.
“Having one of world’s largest and most progressive industry leaders in eye care ask me to share my expertise in cataract surgery is actually quite humbling,” said Dr. Martin. “My partners and I at North Shore Eye Care all strive to provide the absolute best quality care to all of our patients and ensure optimal outcomes. So I feel extremely honored to be recognized for our efforts and to be included in the inner circle of refractive cataract surgeons whom AMO recognizes as leaders in ophthalmology.”
AMO is a leader in vision care with a long history of innovation and market-leading vision correction technologies. They are currently ranked in the TOP 3 in the world for vision care products for cataract patients, LASIK patients and eye care solutions. Their products and services address a wide range of vision disorders and meet the needs of patients who seek greater freedom from the limitations of eyeglasses.
Products in their ophthalmic surgical line include intraocular lenses, laser vision correction systems, phacoemulsification systems, viscoelastics, microkeratomes and related products used in cataract and refractive surgery. AMO is based in Santa Ana, California, and employs approximately 4,200 worldwide. The company has operations in 24 countries and markets products in approximately 60 countries.
During his lectures in June, Dr. Martin focused his discussions on the latest developments in Catalys laser cataract surgery, multi-focal lens implants and the treatment of Astigmatism.
Catalys laser cataract surgery is the latest breakthrough in cataract care and offers surgeons and patients unprecedented precision, accuracy, reproducibility and safety in performing cataract surgery.
Dr. Martin and North Shore Eye Care were the first practitioners on Long Island to offer cataract patients the benefits of the CATALYS Femtosecond laser cataract system. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery using the Catalys Precision Laser System offers a reproducible, noninvasive technique to replace the least predictable - and most technically demanding - steps for surgeons during conventional cataract procedures.
Dr. Martin and his medical staff are among the top 10% surgeons in the world to offer patients the safety, precision and accuracy of the Catalys Laser System. North Shore Eye Care is the first practice in Suffolk County and the second practice on Long Island to give patients access to this advanced laser technology.
Attending surgeons were also informed on the use of multi-focal lens implants and the treatment of Astigmatism. Dr. Martin shared not only how these new-technology intraocular lens implants are surgical inserted and positioned in the eye, but also the importance of patient selection and patient expectations. “Our new-technology IOLs have tremendous potential for patients who want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on prescription eyewear after cataract surgery,” he said. “But not every patient is an ideal candidate. My colleagues need to be aware of the patient parameters we look for in the cataract lens selection process. Patients with pre-existing eye disease or pathology are probably not the most ideal candidates for new-technology lenses,” he said.
Multifocal IOLs are designed to give patients both near and distance vision after cataract surgery with little or no dependence on prescription eyewear. Toric IOLs are used to help correct moderate to high levels of Astigmatism and allow patients to be more independent on prescription glasses for distance.
“As I’ve said before, I believe a significant part of our responsibility as experienced ophthalmic surgeons is to help the next generation of surgeons embrace the latest technology and provide their patients the best possible outcomes,” said Dr. Martin. “I was fortunate to have my father, Sidney Martin, MD, as a mentor and the skills and patient care protocol he taught me over the years has been invaluable to me as a surgeon…and to my patients,” he said.
