Steven Currall, Ph.D., Chancellor’s Senior Advisor for Strategic Projects and Initiatives, University of California, Davis and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, UC Global Health Institute; David Horne, Ph.D., Vice Provost and Associate Director, Beckman Research Institute, City of Hope National Medical Center; and Beth Roberts, Partner, Hogan Lovells US LLP.

About Steven Currall, Ph.D.

Dr. Steve Currall is the Chancellor's Senior Advisor for Strategic Projects and Initiatives and Professor of Management at the University of California (UC), Davis. He also serves as the Vice Chair of the board of directors for the 10-campus University of California's Global Health Institute and is a member of the board of directors of the San Francisco Bay Area Council. Previous academic leadership roles included serving as the Dean of the Graduate School of Management at UC Davis, leading the School to the highest ranking in its history.

A psychological scientist, Currall has conducted research and taught on topics such as innovation, emerging technologies, negotiation, and corporate governance. He was lead author of a book on university-business-government collaboration entitled, Organized Innovation: A Blueprint for Renewing America's Prosperity (Oxford University Press, 2014). He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

As the William and Stephanie Sick Professor of Entrepreneurship in the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University, Currall founded the Rice University Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship. During his five-year tenure as Director, the Alliance assisted in the launch of over 160 new technology start-up companies, which raised in excess of $300,000,000 in equity capital. He also co-founded the Rice University Business Plan Competition, which involved the largest number of competing universities and richest prize money of any graduate student business plan competition in the world. For his leadership in entrepreneurship, he received Stanford University's Price Foundation Innovative Entrepreneurship Educator Award, Ernst & Young's regional Entrepreneur of the Year Award®, and the Grand Velocity Award for Academic Entrepreneurship, Indiana University. He earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University, a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a B.A. (cum laude) from Baylor University.

About David Horne, Ph.D.

Dr. David Horne is vice provost and associate director of Beckman Research Institute and dean of faculty affairs. In this role, he oversees the Irell and Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences, the Postdoctoral Training Office, International Research Programs, Medical Education and the Office of Faculty Affairs. Horne and Steven T. Rosen, M.D, Provost and Chief Scientific Officer are institutional leaders in all aspects of academic scientific and medical education, shaping the scientific and educational vision for City of Hope. As associate director, he assists Dr. Rosen in his responsibilities as Beckman Research Institute director.

Horne is well-known for his scientific and research expertise, as well as his ability to build strong relationships with faculty and leaders across our organization and at partnering institutions. He has held numerous leadership positions since first joining the Beckman Research Institute in 2006, including his most recent role as Interim Director. Horne’s professional experience is complemented by impressive academic achievements in the area of medicinal chemistry and drug development. Horne holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and B.S. in chemistry from UCLA. He was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology as well as a Beckman Young Investigator and National Science Young Investigator Awardee.

About Beth Roberts

Beth Roberts assists clients with optimizing the value of their innovative medical technologies. She helps clients navigate the complex coding, coverage, and reimbursement challenges faced by their new technologies. Roberts counsels clients on Medicare and other healthcare compliance issues and lobbies U.S. Congress and regulatory agencies on her clients’ behalf. Her clients include healthcare providers; pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device manufacturers; investors; and professional and trade associations.

For the last three years, Roberts has been named a Washington D.C. Super Lawyer in Health Care as well as a LMG Life Sciences Star. She also has been honored for her pro bono work. In April 2015, Roberts accepted the Law Firm of the Year Award from the Tahirih Justice Center, and in June 2014, Roberts was part of the Tahirih Justice Center team as Highly Commended in the 2014 Seymour Mintz Excellence Awards. In December 2013, she accepted the LaSalle D. Leffall Hidden Hero Award from C-Change on behalf of Hogan Lovells. Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Roberts served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable John Ferren on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Roberts holds a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law where she graduated with honors and a bachelor’s degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where she graduated magna cum laude.
