Event Celebrates Jews Of All Colors At Downtown Atlanta Jewish Shop, ModernTribe
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 15, 2015 -- On Sunday, August 2nd, Judaica retailer and maker, ModernTribe, is hosting a celebration of the diversity of the Jewish people at its Auburn Avenue retail location in Atlanta, GA. The event will include art, music and learning around Judaism and the mystery of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Atlanta artist Lynette Joel will exhibit her Twelve Tribes paintings, Atlanta rapper Prodezra Beats will perform spiritual hip hop, and short lessons will be hosted by Norvin Bey Israel, a Jew of Ethiopian descent, and Rabbi Efraim Davidson. Atlanta Jewish Music Festival is hosting the stage and will be spinning diverse Jewish music between the featured presenters and performers. The event is free and open to the public.
ABOUT THE TWELVE TRIBES
According to biblical tradition, Jacob’s sons and grandsons lead the Twelve Tribes of Israel and each tribe was allotted territory in the promised land. Ruled under King David and then Solomon, after King Solomon died, the land was split into two kingdoms: Judah to the south and Israel to the north. Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in the 8th century B.C.E. and most Israelites were killed or exiled resulting in the Ten Lost Tribes. Much is unknown and speculated about the fate of these peoples and there is much mystery, mystique and intrigue surrounding them. Today, there are many groups in Africa, Asia and throughout the world who claim connection to the lost tribes. Thus, “Twelve Tribes” has come to represent the diversity - both confirmed and suspected - of the Jewish people today.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Jennie Rivlin Roberts, owner and founder of ModernTribe, explains, “our Auburn Avenue retail location has opened my eyes to the diversity of the Jewish people and practices.” The Auburn Avenue shop opened a year ago in June, as part of Central Atlanta Progress’ Pop Up Retail program. “I’m excited about hosting an event that illustrates and celebrates that Jews come in all colors and are found across the world.”
Originally from South Africa, artist Lynette Joel’s work is influenced by Zulu and Ndebele tribal art and colored beadwork. Her energetic series of paintings on the Twelve Tribes are brightly colored with stylized human and animal characters. Lynette explains, “each art piece has many stories embedded in the work. Viewers can learn about the symbols and lore associated with each tribe.” Lynette’s work can be previewed on her website.
Reuben Formey is Prodezra Beats, the event's featured musician. Prodezra is a DJ and rapper who rhymes about Judaism and Jewish experience in the 21rst century. Currently recording his third album, Prodezra’s contagious beats are full of yearning lyrics as well as inspirational melodies. Prodezra Beats’ music can be previewed on Reverbnation.
Norvin Bey Israel is a Jew of Ethiopian descent whose parents were members of the Moorish Zionist Temple of Harlem, New York and met on a shidduch (Orthodox Judaism system of matchmaking). Norvin will be presenting on the Twelve Tribes of Israel and their ancient association with constellations, the Hebrew calendar, and vocations.
