NetNumber announced today an expanded SS7 Firewall application in its TITAN Centralized Signaling and Routing Control (CSRC) platform. The NetNumber SS7 Firewall application provides multi-layer SS7 protocol stack threat evaluation (MTP3 layer, SCCP layer, TCAP layer, MAP/INAP/AIN layer) and augments and enhances other SS7 applications available on TITAN including STP, HLR/AuC and IN-SCP. Leveraging the flexible, customer-defined logic inherent in NetNumber TITAN, operators now can close security threats as soon as they are discovered rather than waiting for an updated software release. The release of the SS7 Firewall Application is one of the many that play a key role in the TITAN subscriber data management (SDM) vision.
In the SS7 network, trust is the basis for network operation. However, the threat landscape has become more sophisticated and now includes attacks on the SS7 network. Operators have opened up information sources like the HLR to facilitate mobility within and across network(s), along with procedures to query and return information. In an environment where trust is the premise for operation, many protocols and procedures are not capable of detecting fraudulent activity. Attempts at creating internal security within the SS7 stack have been done, but have proven to be easily circumvented by existing and emerging threats. As operators transition to next-generation networks using Diameter- or SIP-based communications, interworking of signaling control protocols complicates security and exposes further threats.
