Following the death of Michael Brown on August 9, 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri, his mother Leslie Mc Spadden gave a rally cry for change. In the midst of her grief about her son, she told the community and the world about the lack of opportunities for those in the African American community, especially men. Her statement motivated the community to begin to discuss what was needed to make a change. One of the people listening was businessman Dave Spence. The great need for economic relief motivated him to assist in the economic development of Ferguson and the surrounding areas. That was the catalyst for Ferguson 1000. The program is a comprehensive agenda to empower the community through employment and entrepreneurship. Ferguson 1000 will host their second hiring event July 18, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Ferguson Community Center.
There has been a lot of progress since the death of Michael Brown. Several resource fairs have been held and a hiring fair earlier this year. The focus of Ferguson 1000 is rebuilding Ferguson through job readiness training, job creation, youth development, and projects. As part of the job readiness training, there will be four (4) job readiness sessions during the day and evening prior to the upcoming hiring event. The job readiness sessions will focus on resumes, interviewing, and making sure participants have professional attire. The Hiring Event Prep sessions are on July 7 and 15, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m., July 9 and 13, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m., at the Ferguson Community Center.
Just like technology was utilized to share the message of injustice, it is being utilized to help jobseekers gain employment. Currently, Ferguson 1000 is seeking to get participants to register online for an upcoming hiring event. Registering for the event online will add participates to a database, so if they aren’t successful at the hiring event they can still be matched with an employment opportunity. According to a Ferguson 1000 spokesperson, “There are job fairs in the St. Louis area but having participants register and using a database that can match their skills to available opening is a great advantage.” The previous hiring fair was a success resulting in more than 30 interviews by 17 companies 9 being hired on the spot. At the hiring event scheduled for July 18, 2015, we F1000 have over 40 companies ready to hire people. Below is a list of companies participating in the hiring event.
