Leading IP Attorney Brings Extensive Legal Expertise to Developer of ZONE Sonography™ Technology

We are pleased to have Tom’s extensive experience in IP law for our patent portfolio, which currently consists of more than 100 patents worldwide.

ZONARE, a leading developer of new generation ultrasound technology, announced it recently appointed Thomas Anderton, J.D. as general counsel and secretary of the company. Anderton is an expert in intellectual property (IP) law and will be responsible for ZONARE’s legal and compliance function as well as the company’s growing portfolio of patents.

“We are pleased to have Tom’s extensive experience in IP law for our patent portfolio, which currently consists of more than 100 patents worldwide,” said Glen McLaughlin, Ph.D., president and founder of ZONARE. “ZONE Sonography™ Technology is a groundbreaking and proprietary ultrasound architecture, which we introduced over a decade ago. Tom will provide the legal leadership necessary to protect this robust portfolio among numerous other responsibilities.”

ZONE Sonography Technology (ZST) is an innovative approach to echo data acquisition and image formation. Using a small number of large “zones,” ZST acquires ultrasound data significantly faster than conventional ultrasound and extracts more information on each transmit receive cycle. Since the speed of sound traveling through tissue is a physical constant, ZST has a significantly faster acoustic acquisition time enabling superior imaging quality. ZST is a Living Technology, which delivers ultrasound imaging excellence based on a dynamic and open architecture that allows ongoing platform evolvement.

“ZST is a fascinating approach to providing outstanding ultrasound images and function,” said Anderton. “In addition to superb imaging, it also enables numerous workflow enhancements such as one-touch image optimization. I look forward to my full-time role with ZONARE.”

Prior to joining ZONARE full-time, Anderton oversaw the legal and compliance functions as a consultant for the company. Before this, he was vice president, Legal Affairs at Presidio Pharmaceuticals. A patent attorney by training, Anderton was either the head lawyer or chief patent counsel at Monogram Biosciences, Genencor and SUGEN, where he created many highly rated IP portfolios. Anderton earned a J.D. from the Vermont Law School, a B.S. in molecular biology from UC San Diego and an M.S. in Molecular Genetics and Cancer Biology from Stanford University.

ZONARE is solely dedicated to ultrasound excellence through its innovative, award-winning next generation technology, which provides the platform for the company’s Living Technology designed to meet its customers evolving imaging needs. The patented design and Zone Sonography ™ Technology (ZST) architecture of the Z.One PRO and ZS3 platforms deliver high-end image quality and clinical versatility. ZONARE is now an independently run, wholly owned subsidiary of Mindray Medical International. For more information, visit
