Aria Health Recruits Veteran Surgeon Dr. Jack Sariego to Lead Breast Health Program and Perioperative Services System-Wide
Philadelphia, Pa. (PRWEB) July 23, 2015 -- As part of its continued commitment to providing residents in Northeast Philadelphia and Lower Bucks County access to the most advanced, personalized care in the region, Aria Health today announced that it has tapped Jack Sariego, MD, FACS, as head breast surgeon and Medical Director of both the Breast Health Program and of Perioperative Services. A Torresdale native and board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Sariego will draw on his more than 25 years of surgical, administrative and military experience to streamline processes across all three Aria campuses and expand and enhance the health system’s breast health program. This is the first of many steps Aria is planning in the expansion of its women’s health services. An additional breast surgeon will join the health system in the fall of 2015.
“We know that our patients want to receive quality care right here in their own community, and we are proud to welcome a surgeon to our team who shares our passion for establishing a comprehensive breast health program that creates lifelong partnerships between doctor and patient,” said Kathleen Kinslow, president and CEO of Aria Health. “Dr. Sariego is known for his compassion and strong desire to provide women with a top breast health resource center. I’m confident we have chosen the right person to expand and improve the program, so we can continue to deliver the high quality of care that our patients have grown accustomed to and deserve.”
Fellowship trained in surgical oncology, Dr. Sariego will focus his clinical work on surgical cases, but is committed to a comprehensive Breast Health Program that is about more than just surgery and oncology. Aria’s Breast Health Program will cover all areas of breast health, focusing also on noncancerous treatments and working closely with other women’s health specialties at the hospital. Dr. Sariego’s clinical practice will be based in Torresdale, but he will oversee the Breast Health Program at all three campuses.
“I am thrilled to be ‘coming home’ to the neighborhood where I grew up and was educated, and to now have the opportunity to give back,” said Dr. Sariego. “Aria’s mission to provide high quality, affordable care to these communities matches perfectly with mine and I couldn’t ask for a more dedicated, talented group of doctors, nurses and administrators to work with to achieve that goal. I will have the opportunity to expand administratively by building onto and managing several already successful departments. Clinically, I will be able to focus upon my passion, which is providing comprehensive breast healthcare in a compassionate and caring environment.”
In addition to his role as Medical Director for Breast Health, Dr. Sariego will carry the title of Medical Director of Perioperative Services. In this role, he will streamline surgery, anesthesia and operating room schedules at each of Aria’s campuses in Torresdale, Frankford and Lower Bucks County and coordinate processes across the health system. He brings extensive administrative experience from his time in the military and in his previous roles in academia, which will allow him to determine and enforce operational best practices. In the past, each campus was managed separately and functioned relatively independently, and Dr. Sariego’s efforts will connect each campus moving forward, which will create a more cohesive perioperative system.
Prior to joining the team at Aria Health, Dr. Sariego served as Professor of Surgery and Associate Program Director for Surgery Residency at Temple University. The bulk of his clinical practice was at Jeanes Hospital, where he also held positions including Chairman of Surgery, Director of Medical Education, and Associate Director for Perioperative Services. He has also served as Chairman of Surgery at Ocean Springs Hospital, the American College of Surgeons State Chair for Trauma for the state of Mississippi, and spent ten years in private practice in rural Mississippi. He began his academic focus at the Medical College of Pennsylvania as well as at Hahnemann University, where he held the position of Associate Professor of Surgery.
Dr. Sariego received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania, and then went on to receive his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He completed a surgical internship at Jefferson University Hospital and a surgery residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, where he also completed a fellowship/preceptorship in Surgical Oncology.
An active member of the United States Air Force Reserve, Dr. Sariego holds a number of military titles, including General Surgeon, Flight Surgeon, and Trauma/Critical Care Specialist. He was a member of the Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT), an elite unit of trauma and critical care experts who cared for injured troops in combat. In this role, Dr. Sariego deployed to Southwest Asia and Europe, and is now the Commander of the 514th Aeromedical Staging Squadron at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. He now resides in Jenkintown, Pa. with his wife and children.
