Drs. Vinay and Reshmi Saranga provide telepsychiatry to their home bound patients and those in rural underserved areas

Telepsychiatry makes the difference between a patient receiving treatment and living more productively...or continuing to suffer untreated.

Drs. Vinay and Reshmi Saranga of Saranga Psychiatry ( in Apex, NC, announced today the introduction of of telepsychiatry to their practice that serves children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. So what is telepsychiatry? It's one-on-one face-to-face psychotherapy and psychiatric treatment over a computer monitor or smart phone screen. The experience can be compared to Skype or Facetime, but patient privacy is protected by use of a highly secure videoconferencing connection that is HIPAA approved.

"We have established patients who are home bound, and will greatly benefit from the option to meet with their doctor from home," Dr. Vinay commented. "There are others who need psychiatric treatment but live in more remote areas where psychiatrists aren't readily available. In many cases, telepsychiatry makes the difference between a patient receiving treatment and living more productively, or continuing to suffer untreated."

Dr. Saranga made the point that patients interested in psychiatry services through telepsychiatry will need to be screened in the office beforehand. It can only be offered to those patients who are currently stable in their treatment. For patients in outlying areas, a trip into the office for screening is necessary to determine if they're good candidates for remote psychotherapy.

But for candidates for telepsychiatry, there is opportunity to engage in psychotherapy, be evaluated, and have medication prescribed if needed, all through a videoconference screen, such as a mobile device or computer monitor.

Anyone in North Carolina interested in treatment by telepsychiatry should contact Saranga Psychiatry on their website ( to make an appointment or call (919) 695-5194.
