The American Cancer Society recommends that everyone speak with their doctor regarding colorectal cancer testing beginning at age 50. It is the third-most common cancer in both men and women, accounting for nearly 9 percent of all cancer deaths. Signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer include the following:
- Rectal bleeding
- Blood in the stool
- Change in bowel habits
- Cramping pain in the lower abdomen
- Weakness and fatigue due to blood loss
Maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, decreasing the amount of red and process meats, and eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day are ways to prevent colorectal cancer.
