More than half of U.S. children and adolescents are not getting enough hydration, which could have significant repercussions for their physical health and their cognitive and emotional functioning.

On June 11, 2015, the American Journal of Public Health published a national study conducted by the T.H. Chan School of Public Health which focused on a potential health issue that has not gotten much consideration in the past—dehydration in children and youth.1 The senior author of the study, Steven Gortmaker, a professor of the practice health sociology, told Science Newsline that “[i]f we can focus on helping children drink more water we can improve their hydration status, which may allow many children to feel better throughout the day and do better in school.”2 SweetLeaf’s newest addition to their product line of stevia sweeteners, SweetLeaf® Water Drops™, offer parents an option for helping their kids keep hydrated, by making water taste great without adding sugars or artificial sweeteners.

With the market domination of sodas and other sugar-laden juices, water tends not to be on the top of the list when it comes to kid’s beverage choices. In the study, which collected data from more than 4,000 children and adolescents, nearly a quarter of them reported drinking no water at all. These cases and the more rampant mild dehydration “could really be reducing quality of life and well-being for many, many children and youth,” according to Erica Kenney, the lead author.3

SweetLeaf® Water Drops™ can make day-to-day hydration tastier—all without calories, carbs, sugars or artificial sweeteners making it a smart way for parents to help address this growing issue. Active school days, physical education classes and school sports mean attention to daily hydration is a must. The study noted “more than half of U.S. children and adolescents are not getting enough hydration, which could have significant repercussions for their physical health and their cognitive and emotional functioning.” According to the Harvard School of Public Health, “…even mild dehydration can cause issues, including headaches, irritability, poorer physical performance, and reduced cognitive functioning.” 4

SweetLeaf Water Drops, available in four delicious flavors, are a sugar-free, gluten-free way to give plain or sparkling water a flavor boost that could be more appealing to the whole family, not just the kids. Flavors like Peach Mango, Strawberry Kiwi, Raspberry Lemonade, and Lemon Lime make water more enjoyable with award-winning sweet taste and without the artificial sweeteners found in other water enhancers. SweetLeaf Stevia® Sweetener is the world’s most trusted stevia brand™.
