Sarasota Sufferers Increased Heroin Overdoses and Deaths
Miami, FL (PRWEB) July 31, 2015 -- According to WFLA on July 16th, Sarasota has seen at least three die everyday as a direct result of heroin use and eventual overdoses. Thricefold deaths have held steady over the last “couple of months” according to WFLA. Law enforcement is struggling to get a handle on the Sarasota heroin epidemic, which was spurred by the crackdown of prescription painkillers. Many users who were addicted to prescription opiates turned to heroin to make up for the deficit. Harbor Village offers Miami-Dade County heroin detox and rehabilitation services and specializes in individualized treatment. The addiction treatment center asserts law enforcement must become instrumental in connecting those with substance use disorders to treatment, and rely on opiate overdose reversal medications to curb the number of overdose deaths.
An associate from the facility comments, “It’s not enough for Narcan to be in the hands of only first responders and law enforcement officers, those in the community must step up and do what they can to help get a handle on the epidemic. Where there is known addiction, or multiple calls to a residence or person suffering from overdose, their family should be immediately issued or referred to a pharmacy where they can obtain Narcan.
“Law enforcement officials should use their means of compulsory to shepherd those with untreated substance use disorders to treatment, where they will get the help they need to overcome addiction. The rising death toll in Sarasota will be abated if more local efforts are made for educate residences on how they can help to curb the problem, by encouraging treatment and recognizing addiction for the untreated disease it is.”
