At around 5:00pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake struck miles away from Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, leveling buildings across the area and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless, injured and dead. According to the humanitarian organization CARE, the Haitian government places the number of people killed at 222,517 and the wounded at 300,600. The Guardian reports that five years on the reconstruction continues, while cholera is still present and public frustration has led to political protests. The survivors deal with the calamity’s aftereffects. Author and pastor Jean Gerard Rhau is one of them and with his new book he recounts his personal experiences “When the 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hit Haiti” (published by Xlibris).

Rhau arrived in Haiti just days before the disaster struck and was ministering in the Church of God at Rue Du Centre, Port-au-Prince, when the calamity occurred. He recounts the events before, during and after the earthquake with vivid detail, describing what happened to him, those who accompanied him, his congregation and the rest of the Haitian population, all of whom would have their lives changed forever. He also explains the prophetic vision he had ten years before his missionary trip, wherein he saw the earthquake as it took place. He claims that he received information concerning that terrible day for the people of Haiti, including the sight of Jesus Christ instructing angels that landed in the sport area in Port-au-Prince called Silvio Cator Stadium. Rhau also says that he received information on other future events that are still to come.

“God is involved in every aspect of our lives, whether we believe it or not,” Rhau says. With his story of survival, he conveys the importance of time, how little of it remains for those who wish to make an impact on society. In his own words, he also gives “new perspectives to those who were there and also those who watched it from afar.”
