Watson Inc. is proud of the employee Garden Club for donating the largest harvest of the season to WHEAT (West Haven Emergency Assistance Taskforce) in conjunction with Connecticut Food Bank’s Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign. Many of the Watson gardeners planted extra rows in their plots this spring for the Food Bank. In addition, two full plots in the Watson garden were designated for the Food Bank. In all, more than 100 plants including cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and zucchini have been planted for the Food Bank as part of this project. On Thursday, July 30, several gardeners gathered to harvest and donate the latest crop which weighed in at more than 50 pounds. This is the third harvest the gardeners have delivered to WHEAT. As the season progresses Watson expects production to increase and future donations to be ever more substantial.

Plant a Row for the Hungry links home and community gardeners and farmers to local food pantries like WHEAT that need fresh, nutritious produce. Gardeners can donate produce to Connecticut Food Bank for distribution to area pantries or donate directly to a local food pantry. More information on the Plant a Row program can be found at the Connecticut Food Bank website, http://www.ctfoodbank.org/how-to-help/plant-a-row.

WHEAT is a private, not-for-profit, tax-exempt program that exists largely upon donations of food, money, and the time and effort of volunteers. WHEAT is part of the network of food pantries working with Connecticut Food Bank. The 5,000 households WHEAT feeds each year include more than 1,000 children. When schools are out for the summer, they provide more than 1,600 extra meals to families whose children would normally be getting school provided breakfast and lunches. The Watson Garden Club was started in April of this year. The gardeners have 28 plots on Watson’s property in Orange on Prindle Hill Road. Watson provided tilling and supplies to get the garden started. Audrey Campos of Connecticut Food Bank met with the Garden Club at the start of the season and provided tips and information to help the gardeners get the most production out of their plots and prepare for harvests. The program is designed to help employees save money while taking advantage of the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables. New gardeners will gain knowledge and gardening skills, and experienced gardeners will have a chance to share what they know by mentoring others.

This is also a great activity to help employees enjoy the outdoors. In addition, cooperative projects, such as erecting the fence and shed, provided opportunities for team building.
