San Francisco okays health warnings on advertisements for sugar-sweetened beverages while non-alcoholic beverage industry giants fight declining soda sales by developing non-carbonated options. Study shows 74 percent of consumers are trying to eat healthier.

A consumer trend towards healthier snack and drink options has been developing for quite some time now, which is why the healthy vending industry has grown so rapidly, said HealthyYOU Vending Owner Mike Burnett.

HealthyYOU Vending says that recent Health Code legislation against sugary drinks and a “No Soda Summer” campaign by the City & County of San Francisco are representative of initiatives across the county encouraging healthier drink and snack choices.

San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee recently approved a measure from the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors (Ordinance 150245) amending the Health Code to require advertisements for sugar-sweetened beverages to include a warning about the harmful effects of consuming the beverage.

“A number of additional legislative initiatives from across the county have proposed bans on or limits to the sale of soda and sugary drinks. It’s clear that these measures are aimed at fighting obesity and its ensuing health complications. We’ve seen a similar trend in schools. However, a consumer trend towards healthier snack and drink options has been developing for quite some time now, which is why the healthy vending industry has grown so rapidly,” said HealthyYOU Vending Owner Mike Burnett.

Burnett, a 16-year veteran of the vending industry, cites a study by the Snack Food Association that found 74% of consumers are trying to eat healthier and that the sale of healthier snacks are outpacing traditional snacks by 3:1. He said that consumers are also trending towards healthier drink options versus soda, like the flavored waters, ready-to-drink teas, non-carbonated juices, non-dairy smoothies, and energy drinks found in HealthyYOU Vending machines.

Recent statistics confirm non-alcoholic beverage industry giants like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are experiencing declining soda sales while seeing more growth in their non-carbonated beverage categories with products like sports drinks, ready-to-drink-tea, energy drinks and bottled water.
