Port of Kalama Awarded Federal Grant to Enhance Port Security Infrastructure
Kalama, Washington (PRWEB) August 05, 2015 -- The US Department of Homeland Security has awarded the Port of Kalama a $394,200.00 grant under the FY-2015 Port Security Grant Program. The Port will match $131,400.00 of non-federal funds or 25 percent of the total approved project costs of $525,600.00. The grant will enable the Port to provide expanded and improved security infrastructure at the North Port Marine Terminal like video surveillance cameras, increased lighting at facilities, installation of new fencing and automated gates.
“This grant enables us to provide a significantly enhanced level of security for our tenants at the North Port Marine Terminal and all port businesses,” says Erik Swenningson, Port of Kalama Facility Security Officer. “It takes a team to secure this level of federal funding and we want to thank our colleagues at the Merchants Exchange of Portland for their support of the grant development, as well as the technology planning and advice of Kalama Telephone and Aronson Security Group.”
The USCG Sector Columbia River COTP, local AMSC, and FEMA reviewed the Port’s request submitted under the FY-2015 PSGP and found that the security plan aligns with the goals of the Area Maritime Security Plan and the Consolidated System-Wide Risk Management/Mitigation, Trade Resumption/Resiliency, and Five-Year Prioritized Project Plan.
“With the Port’s recent business growth comes a higher volume of traffic which makes better area surveillance important for our tenants,” says Port of Kalama Commission President Randy Sweet. “The dedicated staff at the Port of Kalama is consistently seeking partnerships and grant opportunities to better serve our community and businesses. It is these kinds of grants and programs that enhance regional economic development overall.”
About the Port Security Grant Program
The PSGP plays an important role in the implementation of the National Preparedness System by supporting the building, sustainment, and delivery of core capabilities essential to achieving the National Preparedness Goal of a secure and resilient Nation. Delivering core capabilities requires the combined effort of the whole community, rather than the exclusive effort of any single organization or level of government. The PSGP’s allowable costs support efforts to build and sustain core capabilities across Prevention, Protection, Mitigation, Response, and Recovery mission areas.
