Los Angeles Periodontists Speak About Diabetes Link to Gum Disease
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 06, 2015 -- This year marks the 75th anniversary of the American Diabetes Association, an ideal time to educate the public about diabetes' link to gum disease and importance of annual screening. Periodontal experts Dr. Alina Krivitsky and Dr. Alexandre-Amir Aalam are board-certified periodontists in Los Angeles at the CENTER for Advanced Periodontal & Implant Therapy. They explain the link between diabetes and the health of gums in an effort to bring further awareness of these effects to the general public.
“People with diabetes are at a higher risk for gum disease and other dental problems. Approximately 80% of adults develop gum disease and diabetics are especially vulnerable,” explained Dr. Krivitsky. “Diabetes lessens a body's ability to fight germs, making it easy for plaque and gingivitis to quickly build up. Without proper care, gum disease can develop along with other periodontal complications.”
The American Diabetes Association explains that along with gum disease, diabetes exposes the mouth to other serious problems including infections, poor healing, and dry mouth.
“Having diabetes creates special health needs,” adds Dr. Aalam. “Diabetics need to tell their periodontists about their condition and prescribed medication. Most importantly, blood sugar levels must be closely monitored. High glucose levels worsen gums.”
The best prevention is good dental care including annual check-ups by a board-certified periodontist as part of the program. Regular screening helps to ensure that periodontal disease is caught at an early stage when it is easier to treat. Knowing the possible signs of gingivitis and/or serious gum disease is important. Some of the signs are:
- Gums pulled away from teeth
- Bleeding, tender, or swollen gums
- Looseness or shifting of permanent teeth
- Change in fit of partial dentures or bridges
Controlling blood glucose level is one of the most important things to prevent gum disease and maintain good oral health. However, at the first signs of any symptoms, a periodontist must be immediately seen.
Dr. Alexandre-Amir Aalam and Dr. Alina Krivitsky are Board certified Brentwood periodontists specializing in dental implants and gum and tissue diseases. They opened the CENTER, a periodontal office focused on providing patients with excellent and skilled care at affordable prices, with the goal of restoring oral health and aesthetic appearance. They are alumni of the prestigious Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC and are still heavily involved in academia and giving back to future periodontists at USC. They are also the only two board-certified periodontists in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.
