Senior abuse of prescription drugs and alcohol leads to mental and physical problems. Addicted seniors need help from families and physicians for abuse of drugs and alcohol. In his revealing new book, "Unraveling The Psychological Mystery Of Addictions." Dr. James Strawbridge, traces the many factors that are causing physical and mental problems for the growing number of our populations elderly. While the book covers the many aspects of addictions effecting victims of all ages, genders and races, the section dealing with seniors focuses on how to recognize the signs of an addicted senior. "For example many physical accidents happen in the morning when a senior has taken sedatives or sleeping pills and wakes up groggy. Hip fractures and falls are a common result," says Strawbridge. The book also advises that it isn't just the respo9nsobility of the doctor, but the relatives as well, to keep tab on how many drugs the patient is taking, and when new prescriptions are added. And, making sure outdated pills are discarded.

A common occurrence among the elderly who are addicted to alcohol, is memory loss and are likely to think it is Alziheimer's.

They are drinking too much because of loss of friends over the years and loneliness. One again, as the book discusses, the family and social services need to step in.
