Micron Optics HYPERION Platform Now Certified For Use in Explosive Environments

Micron Optics, Inc., a leading provider of innovative equipment for fiber optic sensing and laser imaging, today announces that its HYPERION platform of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical sensing systems is certified for use in explosive environments according to the International Electrotechnical Commission's Certification to Standards relating to Equipment for use in Explosive Atmospheres, IECEx and Atmosphères Explosives, ATEX.

With this international certification, global customers working with explosive environments can be assured that Micron Optics’ dynamic optical sensing systems meet the IEC's standards for intrinsically safe products. Intrinsically safe products receive their classification because both their power use and power storage properties are below the levels required to set off an explosion in a hazardous area.

Through the completion of this certification, we are able to ensure product safety and compliance to occupational health and safety requirements worldwide, thereby opening the benefits of fiber optic sensing technology to a broader range of industrial applications,” stated Scott Riggi, Vice President of Sales at Micron Optics.

The certification process consisted of the TÜV 14 ATEX 7622 U and IECEx TUR 14.0044U certifications, which were conferred by TÜV Rheinland, one of the global leaders in product evaluations and certifications for the worldwide marketplace. After successful completion of the certification, Micron Optics now offers its latest and most advanced optical sensing instruments, modules and sensors for continuous long-term use in explosive atmospheres - areas where flammable liquids, vapors, gases and combustible dusts are likely to occur.

In addition to the ATEX certification, Micron Optics instruments built upon the HYPERION Platform (such as the si255 Optical Sensing Interrogator) comply with the following industry standards:

  • CE compliant
  • Emissions and Immunity Standards EN61326-1, EN61000-3-2 & EN61000-3-3
  • Safety Standard EN61010-1
  • Laser Safety 1M classification according to IEC 60825-2
  • RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances
  • REACH 161 SVHC Chemical Analysis
  • WEEE Design and Recovery, EN50419 & 2012/19/EU
