NETA Introduces New Self-Paced Technical Seminar Courses with Selections from PowerTest 2015

NETA, the InterNational Electrical Testing Association, an ANSI Accredited standards developing organization, has selected two technical seminars from PowerTest 2015’s impressive lineup as the newest additions to NETA’s popular Self-Paced Technical Seminar (SPTS) series. With the addition of these two electrical power system training presentations, a total of 14 SPTS courses are now available.

NETA Self-Paced Technical Seminars are great for ongoing training. They are eligible for NETA CTDs and can also be submitted for CEUs.

Each year, NETA selects two standout presentations to be recorded and produced as SPTS training courses. This year’s selections from PowerTest 2015 are:

1. Electrical Testing Medium-Voltage Stator Windings
Presented by Tom Sandri, Shermco Industries, and Vicki Warren, Iris Power — A Qualitrol Company

2. Acceptance and Maintenance Testing for Medium-Voltage Electrical Power Cables: Exploring Technology Developments Over the Past 20 Years
Presented by Tom Sandri, Shermco Industries

NETA SPTS are training materials created for distance learning. With a four-hour run time, each course includes a CD Rom or USB drive of the recorded technical seminar, a printed copy of the presentation, and one attempt at the proficiency exam. Students can access SPTS courses from any computer with an internet connection at their convenience and at their own pace.

SPTS courses offer NETA Level III and Level IV technicians a convenient way to earn four NETA continuing technical development credits (CTD credits). Additionally, individuals holding other electrically-related certifications or credentials that require continuing education are often able to use these NETA training courses to satisfy those requirements by submitting them to those respective programs for consideration.

Over the past decade, a number of new tests and monitoring techniques have delivered the ability to detect and/or warn professionals of aging problems that can lead to machine failure. The Electrical Testing Medium-Voltage Stator Windings seminar explores stator insulation failure mechanisms, symptoms, and detection tests available in the industry today. Advantages and disadvantages of online monitoring techniques and offline tests are also reviewed.

Acceptance and Maintenance Testing for Medium-Voltage Electrical Power Cables: Exploring Technology Developments Over the Past 20 Years explores developments in testing and evaluation of medium-voltage cables. The intended application of each technique is reviewed, along with its advantages and limitations, providing the necessary knowledge to develop an effective cable-testing program.

This year’s two new SPTS courses are presented by recognized subject matter experts who regularly share their expertise with industry professionals:

Tom Sandri, Shermco Industries, received his BSEE from Thomas Edison University and has been active in the field of electrical power and telecommunications for over 30 years. During his career, Sandri has developed numerous training aids and guides, and has conducted domestic and international seminars. He has been involved with test and measurement equipment for over 20 years and is an industry expert in application disciplines, including battery and dc systems testing and maintenance, medium- and high-voltage cable, ground testing, and partial discharge analysis.

Vicki Warren, Iris Power – A Qualitrol Company, earned a BSEE from Tennessee Technological University, is involved in on-line monitoring and off-line testing to evaluate the condition of insulation systems used in medium- to high-voltage rotating machines, switchgear, and transformers. She works extensively in the development and design of new products used for condition monitoring and testing of rotating machines and has actively participated in the development of multiple IEEE standards and guides. Warren, who chaired the IEEE 43-2000 Working Group, has conducted many seminars and published numerous papers on the testing of high-voltage rotating machines.
