Interior Design Firm Refuses to Design a Typical Kitchen
Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) August 26, 2015 -- It’s not just a show home; Sandhill Crane is a modern home that’s design was to meet the needs of the clients. Two kitchen islands might seem excessive, but the extra island in this kitchen archipelago was installed to meet the needs of the clients and how they will utilize the kitchen space.
For the third year in a row Garrison Hullinger Interior Design (GHID) http://garrisonhullinger.com has been providing their design services to several homes in the NW Natural Street of Dreams http://streetofdreamspdx.com. This year the design firm worked on two houses, one modern and one traditional. The varying styles of the homes showcase the firm’s wide breadth of talent and one room in their modern home, Sandhill Crane, stands out as the showstopper, the kitchen.
One island is pretty typical in a kitchen, but having two is pretty uncommon. Kitchen islands tend to take up lots of space, but the home’s open floor plan allows for two islands. Each of the islands has a main purpose, the one closest to the gas range is mainly for prep and the other is for serving and cleanup. Every aspect of this kitchen is made to be purposefully utilized.
This kitchen design isn’t for everyone; it was designed around how the homeowner will use the space. “We tried to provide the family with ample space to work amongst each other while giving each other 'elbow room' but yet having the adequate elements of being efficient in each work zone,” says Garrison Hullinger. “The cleaning zone has two dishwasher drawers and a larger full-size drawer and all serving ware and dinnerware is located in the opposing island drawers that requires you to only make a pivot and one step when unloading.”
Each island in this kitchen is topped with Caesarstone http://www.caesarstoneus.com GHID knows their way around this easy-to-maintain quartz countertop, this is the fourth Street of Dreams home they’ve used Caesarstone in. The bar attached to the second island is topped with walnut.
The kitchen also features walnut cabinets mixed with battleship gray laminate cabinets resistant to finger prints as well as an appliance garage, perfect for storing toasters, coffee makers and the like when not in use. Every drawer and cabinet has a purpose from the range-adjacent utensil drawers to the trash drawers that open with only a bump of the hip, no need to dirty the cabinets with dirty hands.
The open floor plan of the home allows the kitchen to be inviting, which was designed that way, because the family meets in the kitchen for most of their meals. The kitchen flows seamlessly out to the dining room, which is accompanied by the wet bar. Having the living room next to kitchen allows for more family time in both spaces.
GHID is already thinking ahead, they have big plans for the 2016 Street of Dreams, their Custom Home Design department is currently finalizing home plans.
