Winetech’s Smoke-Taint Removal a Solution for Fire-Impacted California Vineyards

Napa’s leading wine filtration company to offer smoke-taint removal services to wildfire-impacted crops throughout California

Winetech’s mobile filtration units can reduce the damage to grapes tainted by neighboring wildfire and smoke, allowing vintners to harvest from vineyards otherwise considered unusable.

Winetech, a Napa-based mobile filtration service company, has announced it will provide significantly reduced-cost filtration services to wineries across California impacted by 2015’s series of vineyard-damaging wildfires. The severe summer fires blazing across regions including Lake and Napa Counties have cast damaging smoke particles over some of the state’s most in-demand fruit; exposed to “smoke taint,” these grapes will have contaminated aromas and flavor profiles. According to Winetech owner Stefano Migotto, Winetech’s Smoke Taint mobile filtration units can reduce the negative impacts of such exposure, allowing vintners to harvest from vineyards otherwise considered unusable.

CalFire’s website statistics indicate over 117,000 California have acres have burned from wildfire year-to-date – an increase of 25% from 2014. The alarming statistic sparked a call for action.

“Being a mobile-filtration company with the ability to drive our equipment anywhere it’s needed, we’ve developed a lot of close relationships in the wine community— especially in California,” said Ivan Ramirez, Winetech service manager. “When news broke out about the wildfires, our partner vintners were the first thing on our minds. We wanted to lend a helping hand.” The offer? Discounting Smoke-Taint Removal services by 30% for all 2015 vintage wines. “It’s the least we can do,” said Ramirez.

Winetech’s proprietary Smoke-Taint Removal system was developed in response to 2008’s rampant wildfires that plagued California’s north and central coasts. The byproduct was a significant amount of smoke-tainted wines, full of campfire aromas and bitter flavors. With high-demand for taint removal in time for fall harvest, Winetech’s lab development team found a solution: Using reverse osmosis (RO) technology along with absorbent media, elevated levels of 4-Methylguaiacol (4MG) and Guiacol (G) – chemicals responsible for the taint – proved to be effectively removed, with the adverse effects of smoke-taint becoming faint to untraceable.

“Keeping the wines’ complex characteristics while removing the taint itself proved a difficult task. Developing a successful smoke taint removal solution was a championing moment for us,” explained Migotto.
