South Florida Residents Walk to Help Solve the Cruel Mystery of Lupus for 1.5 Million Americans
Miami, FL (PRWEB) October 07, 2015 -- The Lupus Foundation of America, Florida Chapter (LFAFL) will be holding Florida's largest lupus walk, the annual Walk to End Lupus Now event, in the South Florida area on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 3pm bringing together community members — lupus patients, friends, families, health care providers and celebrities — to raise money for lupus research and education programs, increase awareness of the disease and rally public support for those who feel its brutal impact. The event will be held at Marlins Park in Miami and nearly 4,000 people are expected to walk to end one of the world’s most cruel and mysterious diseases.
An estimated 100,000 Floridians, 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide have lupus. Despite the widespread prevalence of lupus, research on the disease has remained underfunded, relative to its scope and devastation. And only one drug has ever been developed specifically to treat lupus and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
“While we work to solve the cruel mystery of lupus, we must ensure that all South Florida residents affected by lupus have access to the resources and support they need,” said Amy E. Yalden, President and CEO of Lupus Foundation of America, Florida Chapter. “By coming together to raise funds and awareness, South Florida residents are showing their power and support for people with lupus, families, friends and entire the community of those suffering with lupus.”
In addition to the walk, there will be a Wellness Expo from 3 – 5:30pm at the same location. Lupus patients and caregivers can learn about the different services and products available to them in the South Florida community that may help them to live a more healthful life while dealing with the brutal impacts of lupus. Some examples of vendors include massage therapists, chiropractors, fitness studios/gyms, other nonprofit organizations, health food samples and demonstrations, etc.
This year’s theme is Discover Your Power. Join LFAFL at the Walk to End Lupus Now and discover your power over lupus by forming a team of walkers, organizing a corporate team, and/or donating to an existing team. Corporate and family and friends teams can raise money through sponsorships and fundraising events.
With help from the community and national sponsors like Mallinkrodt Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneka, LFAFL is able to bring this not-to-be-missed event to Miami. There will be family-friendly entertainment, activities and food trucks, and there is no cost to attend or register. While there is no fundraising requirement, each person is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 to help in furthering LFAFL’s mission and make an impact in the community. Everyone who raises $100 will also become a member of Club100 and receive a free commemorative walk t-shirt.
