Gain an informed peace of mind. Tips from an experienced financial planning firm, Roger R Bell & Company, Inc.

No one controls the markets! Volatile markets can be very disruptive to one's peace of mind. Maintaining an informed peace of mind on the markets requires an understanding of one's own capacity to tolerate market gyrations over an extended period of time.

Over the past week, the markets have experienced substantial volatility and this is extremely disconcerting to many people. The subsequent effect upon one's investments can be either exhilarating or depressing depending on one's financial position.

If one has a predetermined capacity to tolerate a wide variance in their investments the resulting outcome is of lesser, immediate importance. If the markets caused one's investments to decline substantially and they have certain financial limitations warranted by providing for an ill family member, or a pending retirement, etc., that individual could suffer financial impairment beyond repair.

One should place a first and foremost priority on maintaining an informed peace of mind about their financial investments. Focusing on what one has control over is an important part of the process.

How does one do that? As an investor, follow these four tips.

  • Understand that no one person or entity controls the markets.
  • Realize that lack of, or experience with the markets can negatively influence the decision-making process.
  • Obtain the services of an experienced finance professional who can provide objective counsel for determination of financial lifestyle goals and, ultimately the capacity to take risk with investments.
  • Understand that the media does not know an individual’s specific financial capacity and should not be depended upon for ascertaining financial well-being.

Our longstanding recommendation to clients has been that they should "focus solely on what they control and refuse to be influenced by circumstances and/or conditions over which they have absolutely no control.”

It is important to remember that the markets serve a purpose and provides tools in which one can hopefully grow their monies over a period of time.
