Born and raised in Park Ridge, New Jersey, Dr. Michael Betsy graduated from Don Bosco Prep in 1990 and was Class Salutatorian. He earned Varsity letters in football and ice hockey and served as team captain in both sports in his senior year. He was inducted into the National Honor Society as a sophomore, was an active member of the school’s Peer Ministry program and was involved in student government, serving as Senior Class President. In his senior year he was a Bergen Record ‘Scholar of the Week’ and was named by the Bergen Record as one of the Top 25 Local College Football Prospects. He received the Distinguished Athlete Award from The United States Marine Corps and was a recipient of the school’s prestigious Ironman Award.
After graduating from Don Bosco, he attended Harvard University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology, graduating with Cum Laude distinction. While at Harvard he played Varsity Football and Junior Varsity Lacrosse. Dr. Betsy then returned to Don Bosco Prep to become a member of the teaching faculty. He taught AP and Freshman Biology and coached football, ice hockey and lacrosse.
The following year he began pursuing a career in medicine, attending Dartmouth Medical School. While at Dartmouth he was inducted in to Alpha Omega Alpha (the national honor society for medical school), was named a Rolf Syvertsen Scholar, received the Julian & Melba Jarrett Memorial Award, and earned his M.D. with honors.
After medical school Dr. Betsey did his orthopaedic residency at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. In 2005, he returned to Bergen County to begin his career in orthopaedic surgery, joining Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Associates in Emerson, New Jersey. In December 2008 he opened his own solo orthopaedic practice in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.
In addition to his clinical orthopaedic practice, Dr. Betsy serves as an on-field orthopaedic consultant for both Don Bosco Prep and Paramus Catholic high schools. In 2009he was inducted into the Don Bosco Prep Hall of Fame. He lives in the area with his wife Cheryl and their three children. Dr. Betsy is also a professional musician, playing guitar with his band at local area venues every month.
