When it comes to undergoing a hair transplant, most patients have donor hair moved from one part of the scalp to the top of the head. Adding more volume to the hair on top of the scalp, as well as filling in areas missing hair, is a relatively simple procedure for patients who have a good amount of donor hair on other areas of their head.
What about patients who have a limited, or even depleted, amount of scalp donor hair? Is there another donor hair option for them to utilize for a hair transplant? The answer is “Yes.” Patients can now take advantage of advanced hair transplant technology that allows body hair to be harvested for the specific use of scalp hair transplantation. Hair from different areas of the body can be used for harvesting including the chest, back, arms, legs and pubic areas.
It should be noted that body hair has a much shorter growth phase and patients undergoing this procedure may require more hair grafts to get a full look. According to the founder of Parsa Mohebi Hair Restoration, Dr. Parsa Mohebi, “Body hair transplant is usually used as a last resort. We don’t use body hair until we make sure that the patient doesn’t have enough scalp hair, or even beard hair. But for patients that are coming to us without any other resources, we remove the hair from the areas of the chest and arms. Those are the areas where patients have better quality hair. We individually remove the grafts through the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method and transplant them to the balding areas.”
Even with the shorter growth phase, a body hair transplant is still a welcome option for those patients who had given up hope of having a hair transplant thanks to their limited supply of scalp donor hair. The hair comes from the patient’s own body and blends in with the scalp hair to create a natural looking hairline after the procedure.
