If most knew there were hundreds of factors rather than a few quick magic tricks, and if people had the tools to fact-check their professionals based on well-cited evidence, I think we'd see a lot less confusion and devastation.

Northcutt, a Chicago-based provider of inbound marketing services, has released a new resource of more than 250 theorized Google ranking factors. This resource is provided completely free, and is intended to help budding entrepreneurs, SEO practitioners, and businesses with imperfect reputation with search engines build their web presence while avoiding a wide array of dangers.

Unlike previous resources, Northcutt's ranking factors weigh a variety of potential ranking signals against the evidence that has been provided for them, and rates each based on the quality of evidence provided. This study places focus on patent filings, direct statements from Google executives, and scientifically sound experiments, above all else. Sources are cited for all factors.

"Almost everybody that approaches our agency has been burned by at least a few shady SEO services before reaching us," commented Corey Northcutt, CEO of Northcutt and author of the ranking factors resource, "If most knew there were hundreds of factors rather than a few quick magic tricks, and if people had the tools to fact-check their professionals based on well-cited evidence, I think we'd see a lot less confusion and devastation."

For usability as a quick-reference tool, the ranking factors resource can be filtered in a number of ways. Positive/Negative filters allow the user to separate what may be helpful vs. harmful, as the two are not mutually exclusive. On-page/Off-page filters allow the user to separate what factors they can directly control as a part of their site site (on) vs. factors behind their direct management (off). Nuanced categorization separates issues like content vs. code vs. server issues. And most importantly, all factors fit on a sliding scale which allows the organization of how proven certain factors are, ranging from popular myths to concrete validation by multiple sources.
