Selrico Tastefully Reduces Sodium in Meals In San Antonio Feeding Programs
San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) October 22, 2015 -- Selrico Services, who provide meals for all of San Antonio’s 78+ Senior Nutrition Community Centers (more than 7,000 meals a day!) has reduced the sodium amount used in meals served to Senior Citizens.
"Of the many people we serve, seniors tend to have more health-related issues and in our community," says Rick Aleman, CEO of Selrico Services. "Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most prevalent. Our culinary and nutritional teams have worked tirelessly to come up with freshly made specialties from soup to sauces to entrees that are not only low in sodium, but taste great and are healthier than what is available commercially in a can or pre-made package.
These changes have resulted in more than 20,000 milligrams of sodium being removed from senior meals alone. Additionally, 73% of seniors surveyed reported satisfaction with the flavor of sodium-reduced meals. The changes helps meals provided through the city programs meet the nutritional recommendations of the 2010 US Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
According to Ellen Spitsen, Nutrition Coordinator with Metro Health, “The win of this voluntary participation on behalf of Selrico Services is that the seniors and children have not noticed the sodium reduction in their meals and it helps the food manufacturers see that there is a market for producing foods that are healthier without necessarily being marketed as low sodium”
This low sodium initiative is already in use for several of their other clients including Pre-K 4 SA, Our Lady of the Lake University, City Public Service Energy Company and Medical Arts & Research Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Funding for this project was provided by the CDC Sodium Reduction in Communities grant. Selrico is completing the second year of a three-year award and will continue to work identifying foods and meals for sodium reduction.
