The Western landscape, in its many dazzling incarnations, is the focus of the exhibition opening September 18 at the Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt. “Out of the West-Landscapes” features the works of five artists, each offering a personal vision inspired by the expansive vistas and intimate details of the land. The show highlights the work of popular landscape artist and Carbondale, CO resident, Andy Taylor.

Collectors are drawn to landscape paintings for their ability to connect the viewer with the larger environment. "By distilling the wildness of nature into form, structure and color, landscape paintings evoke the drama inherent in the great outdoors in the privacy of our homes and work places," explained gallery director Julia Novy.

Andy Taylor's works of Western Colorado and Utah are prized for their sensitive compositions and dazzling color. From canyons to rivers, fields to mountains, Taylor’s subjects are at once familiar to the viewer, but seen anew from his fresh perspective.

The plein aire paintings of local Dan Young also draw on nearby locations, blending his passion for the outdoors and art. Marie Figge Wise captures mood and atmospheric conditions in her landscapes, revealing a dance of light and shadow. Manmade features, such as barns, tractors and trains are often interjected in Simon Winegar’s landscapes, underscoring human interaction with the land. Whether painting in oil or pastel, Elizabeth Sandia's landscapes vibrate with her signature -- saturated color -- and all convey her special and intimate connection to the land.

“Out of the West” will be on view at the Ann Korologos Gallery September 18 through October 9. The artists' reception will be held on Friday, September 18, from 5 to 7 pm.
