CBCF Celebrates 30th Anniversary of Jazz Forum and Concert at ALC
WASHINGTON (PRWEB) September 14, 2015 -- The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) today announced that award-winning artists Yosvany Terry and Gary Bartz will join host Rep. John Conyers, Jr. for the 30th anniversary of the Jazz Issue Forum and Concert, Sept. 17, during the 45th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
“Jazz music is an American treasure and a historic art form,” said A. Shuanise Washington, president and CEO of the CBCF. “As it is the product of African-American creativity and ingenuity, we are proud to provide a forum to discuss its influence and showcase the artists who are keeping the tradition alive.”
The Jazz Issue Forum, 1:30 p.m, Sept. 17, is entitled, Jazz Preservation, Education and Promulgation in The African Diaspora: Cuba. The session will explore the unique relationship between American and Afro Cuban jazz. Yosvany Terry and Gary Bartz will serve as panelists. Terry, a Cuban saxophonist and composer, is a Harvard lecturer on music and recipient of a 2015 Doris Duke Artist Award. Grammy award winner and Baltimore native Gary Bartz is the 2015 BNY Mellon Living Legacy Award Honoree. He has recorded more than 40 albums, and has been featured on more than 200.
The Jazz Concert, 8 p.m., Sept. 17, will feature performances by Yosvany Terry and Afrocuban Roots and the Gary Bartz Quartet. Host Rep. Conyers will also present the 2015 CBCF Jazz Legacy Award to honorees Gary Bartz and Cuban percussionist Candido Camero.
ASPiRE will formally recognize the Rep. John Conyers during the jazz concert for his efforts to preserve, advance and memorialize jazz as a true African-American art form.
